Hermès Foundation's La Verrière Opens New Chapter with Désanges
Guillaume Désanges has been appointed artistic director of La Verrière-Fondation d'entreprise Hermès in Brussels, succeeding Alice Morgaine. His inaugural exhibition, 'Des gestes de la pensée' (April 20 – July 13, 2013), reinterprets Marcel Duchamp's work as artisanal and laborious rather than purely conceptual. Désanges describes the ready-made as a re-materialization, not dematerialization. The show features Duchamp's rarely seen tools, stencils, and notes alongside works by ten contemporary artists, including Corey McCorkle, Benoît Maire, Michel François, Ann Veronica Janssens, Elias Crespin, Hubert Duprat, Irene Kopelman, and Anna-Maria Maiolino. A palm print of Duchamp, captured by Charlotte Wolff and reproduced by Hans-Peter Feldman, serves as an emblem. The exhibition is presented as a 'trailer' for a future cycle.
