Hermann Nitsch's Multisensory Ritual at CIAC Foligno
The exhibition 'O.M.T. Colore dal rito' at CIAC in Foligno, inaugurated on March 25, 2017, presents relics from Hermann Nitsch's Viennese Actionism ceremonies. The space becomes a multisensory environment with blood-stained canvases, bodily fluids, and red color expressing violent actions. The scent of strawberries temporarily alleviates the violence, but crushed fruits on a table reimmerse viewers in vehemence. All senses are tested except touch, as works remain untouchable despite their proximity, accompanied by hypnotic Nordic music. The exhibition evolves over time: strawberries rot, flowers wilt, mirroring the emotional progression during the 'Orgies of Mysteries'—a process of catharsis and redemption. Through relics and 'unused objects and immaculate materials,' Nitsch bridges past and future actions, recoding color through gestural force in liturgical rituals.
