Herbert Golser's Wood Sculptures Transform Renaissance Palace in Le Marche

exhibition · 2026-04-26

From July 26 to September 6, 2025, the Renaissance Palazzo Roveresco di Montebello in Orciano di Pesaro hosts 'L’anima del legno' (The Soul of Wood), a solo exhibition by Austrian artist Herbert Golser. Curated by Riccardo Freddo and Luca Baroni, the show features sculptures made from discarded branches, bark, and abandoned trunks, celebrating nature's vitality. The choice of waste wood conveys themes of restitution, memory, and time. The historic setting—once home to Lavinia Feltria della Rovere, a 17th-century noblewoman and patron of the arts—amplifies the works' permanence. Freddo states, 'Every sculpture is a fragment of time.' This exhibition is the first phase of a broader project to bring contemporary art to authentic villages. Freddo and Baroni aim to establish a long-term program inviting international artists to create site-specific works in historically charged locations and engage with Italian masters. Lavinia della Rovere, sister of Duke Francesco Maria II, transformed the former military outpost into a manor and hosted a circle of artists, writers, and clergy, including poet Torquato Tasso. The project revives her legacy of gathering creators and thinkers.
