Herb Newman's Futuristic Tunnel at New Haven's Union Station Faces Demolition in $402M Renovation
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) has proposed a $402 million renovation that could lead to the destruction of the unique pedestrian tunnel at Union Station New Haven, which was designed by Herb Newman in partnership with SOM and completed in 1988. The current metallic tunnel lining and its ovoid shape will be replaced with a rectangular structure adorned with hexagonal green and white tiles, while the existing red flooring will transition to white and gray surfaces. HNTB is the architectural lead, with WSP managing the project. A public meeting was held on April 14 to discuss the preliminary designs. The renovation will feature a new canopy over all four tracks, a central atrium with arched trusses, and bold "UNION STATION" signage. Additionally, nearly 2,500 housing units named Union Square will be constructed across the street, replacing a demolished public housing campus, with design by Newman Architects and Dattner Architects. Construction is set to commence in 2029.
