Hérault Arnod's Paris Housing Complex Redefines Collective Living

In the western Parisian suburb of Rueil-Malmaison, Hérault Arnod Architectures has completed a 92-unit housing complex that challenges the French preference for single-family homes. Located on a former industrial site, the building mediates between the adjacent ZAC de l'Arsenal eco-district and a low-rise residential neighborhood, stepping down in height to minimize shadows. Organized around a central courtyard with a rainwater-collecting pool, each unit—spanning affordable rentals, subsidized ownership, and market-rate housing—enjoys dual-aspect daylight and private outdoor space. The sand-colored precast concrete facade, chosen for economy and durability, features a ribbed surface and metal balcony screens. A democratic circulation strategy funnels all residents through a shared porch and garden, while exterior corridors encourage spontaneous encounters. Shared amenities include a glazed community room, planted roof terraces, and innovative storage solutions: balcony screens double as storage boxes, and bike lifts lead to covered landings with e-bike charging ports.
