Hepworth Wakefield Wins £100,000 Freelands Award for Hannah Starkey Exhibition
Hepworth Wakefield in Yorkshire has been named the recipient of the 2019 Freelands Award, a £100,000 prize from the Freelands Foundation. The award, established in 2016, supports regional arts organizations in presenting large-scale exhibitions by mid-career female artists. In 2020, the Hepworth Wakefield will collaborate with the Freelands Foundation to mount a major survey of London-based photographer Hannah Starkey. This will mark Starkey's first solo institutional exhibition. Her practice investigates the relationship between women and their urban environments. For the Wakefield project, Starkey will produce a substantial new series of works in collaboration with local young women. These images will examine their experiences of the city and explore how photographic images, a medium they use to shape identity, are constructed. The award enables the creation of a significant new work as part of the exhibition.
