HENRYTIMI Transforms 17th-Century Monastery into Nomos Hotel in Rome

architecture-design · 2026-05-06

Italian designer and artisan HENRYTIMI has converted a former 17th-century Franciscan monastery in Rome's Regola district into the Nomos Hotel, a minimalist hospitality project that prioritizes raw material honesty and spatial silence. The building, near San Paolo alla Regola, was stripped of superficial additions to reveal its original character. Interiors feature hand-applied clay plaster, raw travertine, and custom-poured terrazzo, with an original baroque wall fountain preserved. The 31 guest rooms and suites, called 'Raw Rooms,' contain custom-crafted furniture including monolithic travertine washbasins and desk alcoves carved into walls. A secluded inner courtyard with towering stone totems anchors the ground floor. The project reflects a broader shift toward highly curated boutique hotels that resist aesthetic homogenization, exemplified by the Celadon Suite by Uchronia at the Mandarin Oriental in London. Nomos Hotel is positioned as a destination for design travelers seeking emotional resonance over standard amenities.
