Henry Moore Drawing Exhibition Opens at Museo Novecento in Florence
The Museo Novecento in Florence has opened 'Henry Moore. Il disegno dello scultore', the first exhibition of 2021 in the city, following the Italian government's decision to allow museum reopenings in 'yellow zone' regions. Curated by Sebastiano Barassi and Sergio Risaliti, the show presents around seventy drawings by Henry Moore alongside graphic works, sculptures, and a video section. It explores Moore's drawing practice and his connection to nature, featuring recurring motifs such as rocks, animals, skulls, and trees. The exhibition also highlights Moore's historical ties to Florence, where he first came in 1925 on a scholarship from the Royal College of Art, studying works by Giotto, Michelangelo, Masaccio, and Donatello. A collateral exhibition, 'Henry Moore in Toscana' (until May 30, 2021), displays small sculptures from local private collections, sketches, documents, and photographs documenting his fascination with Tuscan landscapes like the Apuan marble quarries. The main exhibition runs until July 18, 2021, occupying three floors of the museum. Notable works include 'Modello per forma animale' (1969-1971) on loan from Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena. Florence's culture councilor Tommaso Sacchi called the reopening a sign of hope after a year of crisis for the cultural sector.
