Henry Art Gallery showcases Helen Frankenthaler's printmaking legacy

The Henry Art Gallery in Seattle is presenting a major exhibition dedicated to Helen Frankenthaler's prints, highlighting a lesser-known aspect of the renowned Abstract Expressionist's career. Frankenthaler (1928–2011), who gained prominence by age thirty-two in a male-dominated art world, is celebrated for her innovative 'soak-stain' technique, where thinned paint was applied to unprimed canvas to create watercolor-like effects, integrating chance into her process. Despite the apparent contrast between her spontaneous painting and the methodical nature of printmaking, Frankenthaler produced over three hundred print editions from 1961 through the 2000s, experimenting with etching, lithography, silkscreen, and woodcut. These works were created in collaboration with notable workshops including Universal Limited Art Editions, 2RC, Tyler Graphics, and Ediciones Polígrafa.
