Henriette Sabroe Ebbesen's monograph Self Reflection explores perception through distorted natural imagery

publication · 2026-04-19

Danish photographer Henriette Sabroe Ebbesen's monograph Self Reflection, published by Disko Bay, investigates how perception can be manipulated through reflective surfaces and illusions. The book features images of submerged tulips, distorted garlic cloves, and segmented grapefruits that blend reality with surrealism. Ebbesen's medical background, including assisting her mother who is a plastic surgeon, informs her focus on the body and self-image. Her work has been featured in Vanity Fair and Vogue, and she has exhibited in both Europe and the United States. The publication draws comparisons to Renaissance painter Pieter Bruegel (1631-1697) and contemporary photographer Ori Gersht's explosive floral works. Self Reflection accompanies Ebbesen's solo exhibition Kaleidoscope at Fotografiska Museum Stockholm, which runs until 12 May 2024. In the exhibition, she manipulates physical rules of image-making to create a disorienting experience where viewers question their position relative to water. The artist aims to bend reality so observers can experience something beyond their usual perceptions.
