Henri Maldiney's 'Regard, parole, espace' Reissued by Éditions du Cerf

publication · 2026-04-23

Éditions du Cerf has reissued Henri Maldiney's 'Regard, parole, espace', originally published in 1973 by L'Âge d'Homme. This volume, introduced by Jean-Louis Chrétien, is the first in a republication series of Maldiney's complete works, including 'L'Art, l'éclair de l'être' and others. The collection features key texts such as 'Le Faux dilemme de la peinture abstraction ou réalité' (1953) and 'Esthétique des rythmes' (1967), along with later writings influenced by aesthetics as a sensory thought. Maldiney, born in 1912, explores themes of art, painting, poetry, language, rhythm, style, psychiatry, and spatial perception. Drawing from Husserl and Heidegger, he critiques 'overview thinking' that reduces experience to representation, advocating instead for a 'sensing' that opens us to the surprise of encounter. His references include Cézanne, Tal Coat, Chinese painting, André Du Bouchet, and Francis Ponge, through whom he develops notions of style, rhythm, form, and pictorial space. The book aims to convince readers that there remains a world to experience in the flesh.
