Hennessey Blackbird Hypercar: Analog Tribute to SR-71 Spy Plane

Hennessey Special Vehicles has unveiled the Blackbird, a new hypercar that pays tribute to the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, marking the company's second clean-sheet creation. The car features a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 engine developed with Ilmor Engineering, producing an estimated 800 to 900 horsepower, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It targets a top speed of 220 mph and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. The design, led by Nathan Malinick, emphasizes analog sensibility and comfort, with no display screens in the cockpit, instead featuring a central tachometer and gated shifter. The exterior includes a distinctive chine line and active vertical stabilizers angled at 71 degrees, deployed at 71 mph, and a quad-exhaust diamond pattern inspired by the Bell X-1. The car offers practical storage for luggage, with room for two carry-on bags in the front and additional space behind the seats. Production is limited to 71 examples, with a starting price of $2.5 million, expected to begin in 2028 or 2029. The show prototype will debut at Monterey Car Week on August 14 at the Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, where Hennessey expects the entire production run to be presold. Founder and CEO John Hennessey has been on a 35-year mission to push automotive boundaries, previously developing the Venom F5 and its variants. The Blackbird is seen as a new chapter for Hennessey, reflecting a customer desire for material connection and analog driving experiences.
