Helsinki's Oodi Central Library Opens December 5
Helsinki's new Central Library Oodi, designed by ALA Architects, opens on December 5, 2018, the eve of Finland's Independence Day. The 17,000-square-meter building cost €98 million and is expected to attract 2.5 million visitors annually. Located in the Töölönlahti cultural district, it complements the Helsinki Music Centre, Finlandia Hall, Sanoma House, and Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art. Architect Antti Nousjoki describes Oodi as one of the freest buildings in the Nordic countries, an open platform for diverse activities. The three-story structure features a ground-floor lobby adaptable for events, a second floor with offices and workshops, and a third-floor 'Book Heaven' for reading and relaxation. Wood surfaces in Finnish spruce contrast with surrounding glass and steel buildings. The library was presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale on May 24 by Helsinki Mayor Jan Vapaavuori. Citizens contributed 2,600 name suggestions in a 2016 competition, selecting 'Oodi'.
