Helmut Newton's Legendary Sumo Returns to Berlin with New Exhibitions
The Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin is staging a new exhibition of the legendary photobook Sumo, originally published by Taschen in 1999. The 50×70 cm volume, curated by Newton and his wife June in 2000, serves as an artistic autobiography of the provocative German photographer (1920–2004). Ten years after a 2009 show that displayed all 460 pages framed on walls, the 2019 exhibition presents Newton's famous Big Nudes, fashion shots for Vogue, Elle, Stern, and Vanity Fair, and portraits of Liz Taylor, Jodie Foster, Salvador Dalí, and Andy Warhol. It also features an expanded version of Three Boys from Pasadena, showcasing works by Newton's former assistants Mark Arbeit, George Holz, and Just Loomis. Additionally, the Photo Collection of Helmut and June, recently entrusted to the foundation, is on view for the first time. The exhibition runs from June 7 to November 10, 2019.
