Helmut Federle's Monumental Abstraction at Marseille's M-ARCO
The M-ARCO foundation in Marseille is hosting a major exhibition of Swiss artist Helmut Federle, titled 'Dark Night Three,' in its vast industrial space within the former city slaughterhouses built in 1989. The exhibition, the most significant for Federle in France since his 2002 retrospective in Nantes, spans works from 1980 to the present, drawn from private and public collections. Federle's large-scale paintings from the 1980s pursue a monumental abstraction rooted in post-war American abstraction, rejecting postmodernism and anecdote. His works, such as the untitled 1980 acrylic on paper mounted on aluminum (189 x 214 cm) with broad yellow bands on gray, and 'McArthur Park' (1987, acrylic on canvas, 220 x 330 cm, Musée de Grenoble), exhibit a 'defeat' of geometry through imprecise forms. Federle's painting is described as an existential and spiritual experience, austere and unseductive, yet carrying authority. The exhibition reveals the presence of major Federle works in France, with the artist represented in top public collections across Europe and the United States. The more recent small paintings, with thick colors and modulated light, show the artist relinquishing power and surrendering to material imprecision.
