Helmut Ditsch glacier painting removed from Casa Rosada as Argentina weakens glacier protections
Just days prior to the amendment of the glacier law by Argentina's Congress on 9 April, President Javier Milei's government took down Helmut Ditsch's 2006 artwork "The Triumph of Nature" from the Casa Rosada. This painting, measuring 1.3m by 4m, showcases the ice fields of Patagonia, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Officials cited "structural damage" and "maintenance" as reasons for its removal, yet did not elaborate further. Ditsch, who found out about the removal through media reports, has not received any formal communication and has sought legal advice. On the same day, a portrait of Juan Domingo and Evita Perón was also taken down. Since assuming office in December 2023, Milei has implemented various changes in public institutions, leading historian Felipe Pigna to compare this to past military dictatorships.
