Helmut Dirnaichner's Salento-Inspired Works on View in Lecce
Helmut Dirnaichner (b. 1942) is presenting a solo exhibition in Lecce, featuring works on recycled paper painted with pure pigments. The artist moved to Salento in 1979 with his wife Christine after living in Munich (his birthplace) and Milan (where he studied). He restored a small masseria, establishing a studio under a long barrel vault lit by clear light. The deep lapis lazuli blues, malachite greens, and red earths of the Salento landscape—explored with the eye of an artist and the attention of an explorer—inform the formal balances of his pieces. The exhibition reinterprets minimalist tenets with a warm Mediterranean light that embraces nature, sky, and earth. The text is by Lorenzo Madaro, a contemporary art curator and professor of contemporary art history at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan since November 2, 2022.
