Hello World. Revision einer Sammlung at Hamburger Bahnhof

exhibition · 2026-04-24

The exhibition 'Hello World. Revision einer Sammlung' at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin (April 28 to September 9, 2018) is the first in Germany to explicitly challenge the Western European and North American dominance of the Nationalgalerie's collections. Directed by Udo Kittelmann, the show spans 10,000 square meters across 13 chronological and geographical chapters from 1870 to today. It critiques the museum's own collection history, which began in 1861 under a nationalist and colonial Eurocentric vision. The exhibition attempts to adopt collaborative intercultural methodologies, but critics note that non-European works remain underrepresented, especially from Africa. Notable curatorial contributions include Anna-Catharina Gebbers' 'Making Paradies' section, which examines Indonesian colonial imagery with advisors Grace Samboh and Enin Supriyanto, and Sven Beckstette and Azu Nwagbogu's 'Colomental' section, focusing on colonial violence and the Herero and Nama genocide. Artists featured include Walter Spies, Osman Hamdy Bey, Peggy Buth, Astrid S. Klein, Dierk Schmidt, and Joël Andrianomearisoa. The exhibition is part of a broader initiative by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes to revise national collections.
