Helen Levitt's Street Photography Exhibition at Fundación MAPFRE Madrid

exhibition · 2026-04-19

From February 19 to May 17, 2026, Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid will host a comprehensive exhibition dedicated to American photographer Helen Levitt, curated by Joshua Chuang. This showcase, featuring around 220 pieces, marks the first retrospective utilizing Levitt's entire archives. Born in 1913 and passing away in 2009, Levitt documented the streets of New York City during the late 1930s, emphasizing working-class areas. The exhibition is divided into nine thematic sections, presenting her black-and-white prints, previously unseen works, images from her 1941 trip to Mexico City, and color photographs from the 1950s onward. Additionally, it will feature her 1948 documentary film 'In the Street.' Levitt gained acclaim following her 1943 solo exhibition at MoMA and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1959.
