Helen Chadwick's First Italian Retrospective Opens at Florence's Museo del Novecento

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Museo del Novecento in Florence presents "Life Pleasures," the first Italian retrospective dedicated to British artist Helen Chadwick (1953–1996). Curated by Sergio Risaliti, Stefania Rispoli, and Laura Smith, the exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of Chadwick's intense yet brief career, highlighting her sensual, politically charged, and eco-feminist practice centered on the body. The show opens with "The Oval Court" (1984–86), a photocopy installation parodying a rococo fountain, where the artist's self-representations swim in her own tears. Other key works include the "Lofos Nymfon" series (1992–1993), inspired by her Greek mother; "Glossolalia" (1993), featuring real fur; "Piss Flowers" (1991–92), bronze sculptures made from urine; and "Ego Geometria" (1983–84), a self-portrait series. The exhibition also recreates the 1988 Venice Biennale installation with "In the Kitchen" (1977) performance photos, where Chadwick wore sculpture-dresses resembling household appliances to critique women's domestic roles. The show opened on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, accompanied by a talk titled "La violenza delle parole" featuring Santa Nastro, Silvia Motroni, and Mario De Maglie. Chadwick, who influenced the Young British Artists including Tracey Emin, died prematurely and was largely forgotten until this retrospective.
