Heinz Endowments Overhauls Arts Funding Strategy

institutional · 2026-05-27

On Tuesday, the Heinz Endowments, a prominent foundation in Pittsburgh, revealed a significant change in its approach to arts funding. Instead of focusing on individual artists, performances, and exhibitions, the foundation aims to enhance the overall arts ecosystem. In the last ten years, it allocated around $186 million to more than 280 arts organizations. This year, it plans to grant $14 million under new guidelines that emphasize collaboration, community impact, and systemic support rather than isolated projects. Jasmin DeForrest, managing director of arts and culture, cited post-pandemic issues like dwindling audiences and an aging donor base as catalysts for this shift. Responses from the arts sector varied, with Patrick Fisher from GPAC expressing cautious hope and James McNeel from City Theatre acknowledging the logic behind the new priorities but questioning their execution. DeForrest indicated that some of Pittsburgh's roughly 500 arts organizations might need to explore mergers or consider graceful closures.
