Heimo Zobernig Discusses Austrian Pavilion Plans for 2015 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Heimo Zobernig is set to showcase an architectural piece at the 2015 Venice Biennale, designed specifically for Austria's national pavilion in the Giardini. In a response to ArtReview's questionnaire, he mentioned that his artistic approach adapts to the exhibition context, noting differences between gallery and museum displays. Reflecting on his early experiences at the Biennale, Zobernig recalled visiting the Austrian pavilion in 1972, where he encountered Hans Hollein and Oswald Oberhuber, and later attended Harald Szeemann's inaugural "Aperto" in 1980. He emphasized that he represents "the country of art" rather than Austria alone, viewing restrictions on artistic freedom as problematic. Zobernig acknowledged the considerable social influence a pavilion in Venice has on Austria's art landscape. This interview, part of ArtReview's daily series for the 56th Venice Biennale, was published online on April 25, 2015. He also intends to explore all other exhibitions during the event.
