Hedi Slimane's 'Perfect Stranger' at Almine Rech

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Hedi Slimane (Paris, 1968) presented his second solo exhibition at Galerie Almine Rech in Paris, titled 'Perfect Stranger', from November 28, 2007, to January 5, 2008. Known for his black-and-white portraits of rockstars like Courtney Love and Pete Doherty, Slimane created a stage-like installation that immerses viewers in a backstage atmosphere. The exhibition features a sound installation with boomers playing crowd noise from a Klaxons concert at Benicassim in July 2007, a floor covered in glitter powder evoking both rockstar presence and fashion runways, and five large black-and-white photographic portraits of fans mounted on an aluminum security barrier. A large black-and-white print on canvas depicts tongues of fire. A fragment of the stage where Amy Winehouse performed in Paris in 2007 is hung on the wall like a monochrome, with heel marks resembling graffiti. A white neon sign reading 'Perfect Stranger' pays homage to anonymous fans. Upstairs, two additional black-and-white prints on canvas ('Fan with a cigarette', 'Backstage') are displayed, along with a double installation referencing the Klaxons concert: a strobe light in a narrow black corridor and a video of slow-moving smoke in a black box. Slimane's use of raw materials like aluminum and wood channels rock energy, while the polished treatment tempers any violence, capturing the glamorous yet ambiguous aesthetic of a powerful, self-destructive generation.
