Hedi Slimane leaves Celine after six and a half years

Hedi Slimane has departed Celine after six and a half years as creative director, a role he assumed in 2018 following stints at Dior Homme and Yves Saint Laurent. His successor is American designer Michael Rider, former creative director of Polo Ralph Lauren, who previously spent a decade at Celine alongside Phoebe Philo. Slimane is known for redefining menswear with skinny silhouettes and merging subcultures like Grunge and Goth. He studied art history at the École du Louvre and humanities at Hypokhagne in Paris. His career began in 1997 at Yves Saint Laurent's men's line, later moving to Dior Homme and Saint Laurent. At Celine, he described his approach as playing with a refined concept of bourgeoisie without the weight of history. Speculation mounts that Slimane may become the next creative director of Chanel, following Virginie Viard's departure. His Spring/Summer 2025 womenswear collection for Celine was presented through black-and-white photos and videos, bypassing a runway show. An announcement from Chanel is expected before Christmas 2024.
