Héctor Fernández Elorza Transforms 19th-Century Pignatelli Reservoirs into Urban Park in Zaragoza

architecture-design · 2026-04-19

In 2023, architect Héctor Fernández Elorza gave new life to the deserted Pignatelli Reservoirs in Zaragoza by turning them into a lively urban park. These four large reservoirs, built in the late 1800s, were crucial for supplying water to southern Zaragoza from the Imperial Canal. Each one was 125 by 40 meters and 4 meters deep, holding a total of 80,000 cubic meters of water. After a century of service, they fell into disuse, creating a notable gap beside Pignatelli Park. The area covers 27,394 square meters, curated by Valentina Díaz, with a design team that included Javier Moraleda Peruler and others, while Grupo MLN handled the construction. Montse Zamorano documented the completed park.
