HEAP: Festival of Dangerous Ideas Buried Art Installation at Carriageworks
The Festival of Dangerous Ideas (FODI) in Sydney will feature HEAP, an ephemeral installation where eight artists bury their artworks in 120 tonnes of soil for audiences to excavate. The festival, themed 'Revelation', runs from 22 to 23 August at Carriageworks. Curated by FODI Festival Director Danielle Harvey, HEAP is a live experiment in relinquishing control and engaging audiences in the act of discovery. Artists include Brook Andrew, Aretha Brown, Keg de Souza, Tarryn Gill, HOSSEI, Sophie Penkethman-Young, Tim Silver, and EJ Son. Their works are buried in 10 layers of soil, with some possibly never found. EJ Son's piece, 'Stone Bread', consists of stone breads made from coffee grounds, salt, sand, and flour, each containing a mystery note or object. Keg de Souza's 'Subterranean Echoes' uses biologically dead soil and bronze fossils created with children, exploring the idea that biodiversity might only survive as memory. The installation required six 20-tonne trucks and four earthmovers. Harvey emphasizes the importance of taking risks and the political nature of giving up control. Sessions are free but require booking.
