HBO's 'Minx' Series Chronicles the Birth of Playgirl, First Erotic Magazine for Women

digital · 2026-04-27

HBO's upcoming series 'Minx', created by Ellen Rapoport, tells the story of Playgirl, the first erotic magazine for women launched in the 1970s as a feminist response to Playboy. Set in Los Angeles, the show follows Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond), a young feminist activist who partners with a low-profile publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the groundbreaking publication. The 10-episode series, each half-hour long, premieres in America on March 17. Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max, expressed enthusiasm for the feminist and unique series, praising the cast and partners including Ellen, Rachel, Feigco, and Lionsgate. Rapoport thanked the team for recognizing the story's potential from her initial pitch with stacks of 1970s porn magazines. The real Playgirl was founded by Jenny Lambert, wife of nightclub owner Douglas Lambert, who aimed to rival Hugh Hefner's Playboy. The magazine sparked controversy from conservative groups after its first issue but featured essays by Gloria Steinem, interviews with Maya Angelou and Joyce Carol Oates, and articles on breast cancer, abortion, and equal rights, alongside nude male centerfolds. The series promises to depict this cultural revolution.
