Hazem Harb's Artistic Shift from Archival Collages to Raw Charcoal Works Amid Gaza War

publication · 2026-04-20

Hazem Harb, a Palestinian artist originally from Gaza City, born in 1980 and currently residing in Dubai, altered his artistic direction following the recent conflict in Gaza. After his family home was destroyed in October 2023, he transitioned from collage to expressive charcoal paintings. In November 2023, he showcased five large charcoal works at the Abu Dhabi Art fair via Tabari Artspace. His upcoming exhibition, 'Gauze,' set for January 2024 at Tabari Artspace Dubai, will include pieces from the early 2000s alongside his new charcoal creations. Harb's background features a 2004 scholarship to the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, relocating to Dubai in 2013, and the 2021–22 exhibition 'Temporary Museum. For Palestine.' In February 2024, his father was detained, leading to sporadic communication with his family.
