Hayao Miyazaki Retrospective to Open Academy Museum in Los Angeles
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, designed by Renzo Piano, will open in Los Angeles in spring 2021 with its inaugural temporary exhibition dedicated to Hayao Miyazaki. The exhibition, titled "Hayao Miyazaki," opens on April 30, 2021, and features original materials from Studio Ghibli, including imageboards, character designs, storyboards, layouts, backgrounds, and posters. It includes large-scale projections of film clips and interactive installations like Sky View and Mother Tree. Curated by Jessica Niebel, formerly of the Deutsches Filmmuseum in Frankfurt, and her assistant J. Raúl Guzmán, the show is the first retrospective of Miyazaki in North America. Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki have collaborated closely with the curators. The exhibition also touches on Miyazaki's collaborations with Isao Takahata, featuring original Japanese posters and film screenings. A 288-page catalog will be available online. The museum's flexible "black box" space, designed by Renzo Piano, allows for tailored exhibitions. The show includes a symbolic tunnel inspired by "My Neighbor Totoro" as an entrance portal.
