Hauser & Wirth to Open St. Moritz Gallery in Badrutt's Palace Hotel

institutional · 2026-05-04

Hauser & Wirth continues its global expansion with a new venue in St. Moritz, Switzerland, set to open in December 2018. Located inside the five-star Badrutt's Palace Hotel, the space was designed by Argentine architect Luis Laplace, who previously worked on the gallery's outposts in Gstaad and Somerset. The inaugural exhibition will feature works by Louise Bourgeois. This marks the gallery's third Swiss location and its ninth international outpost since its founding in Zurich in 1992. President and co-founder Iwan Wirth recently announced a separate five-story mega-space in New York's Chelsea neighborhood. St. Moritz, a luxury ski resort, has a long artistic heritage: the Giacometti family and painter Giovanni Segantini lived there, and figures like Friedrich Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, Vaslav Nijinsky, Gerhard Richter, Julian Schnabel, Richard Long, and Joseph Beuys have been inspired by the Engadin valley. Hauser & Wirth's strategy of opening in tourist destinations frequented by collectors, as seen in Gstaad, aims to offer high-level art during vacations. The St. Moritz gallery will host an annual program of exhibitions focused on contemporary artists and 20th-century masters.
