Hauser & Wirth to Open Major Art Center on Minorca's Isla del Rey

Hauser & Wirth announced plans to open Hauser & Wirth Menorca on the Isla del Rey in Mahon's harbor, Balearic Islands. The 1,500-square-meter center will occupy an 18th-century naval hospital complex, restored by architect Luis Laplace and landscape designer Piet Oudolf, who previously collaborated on Hauser & Wirth Somerset. The project, in partnership with the Fundación Hospital de la Isla del Rey, President Luis Alejandre, and the Mahon municipality, includes exhibition spaces, educational programs, gardens, a shop, and a restaurant. Local architects Miquel Sintes, Minerva Sánchez, Bià Garriga, and Álvaro de la Rosa will also contribute. The center aims to promote the territory through cultural activities and contemporary art, engaging local communities and international visitors. Co-founder Iwan Wirth cited the island's wild beauty and community enthusiasm as key motivators. Hauser & Wirth, which operates galleries in Zurich, London, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Gstaad, and St. Moritz, has expanded beyond traditional galleries: it launched the Ursula magazine in 2018, a nonprofit institute for artist archives, and opened a Hauser & Wirth Publishers headquarters in Zurich during Zurich Art Week.
