Hauser & Wirth Opens New Zurich Gallery with Georges Vantongerloo Show

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Hauser & Wirth has inaugurated a new exhibition space in Zurich's historic cultural district on Rämistrasse, adjacent to the baroque 'Haus zum Garten' and near institutions like the Kunsthaus and Schauspielhaus. The building conversion was overseen by architect Luis Laplace, who previously worked on the gallery's Vieux Chalet in Gstaad and St. Moritz location. The inaugural exhibition is dedicated to Belgian modernist Georges Vantongerloo (1886-1965), a painter, sculptor, architect, and designer who was a member of De Stijl alongside Piet Mondrian, and later founded the Abstraction-Création group in 1931. The show, curated by Angela Thomas Schmid of the Max Bill Georges Vantongerloo Stiftung, traces his career from the 1920s through his mature 'concrete compositions' characterized by simplified, undulating lines and interplay of color, light, and transparency. Iwan Wirth stated that the space allows for intimate encounters with art of extraordinary caliber, contributing to Zurich's vibrant ecosystem of museums, private collections, and galleries.
