Hauser & Wirth Opens Make Space in Southampton for Craft and Design

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Hauser & Wirth is set to unveil a new venue for its Make project in Southampton, New York, situated on Long Island's East End, marking the initiative's inaugural US location. Launched in England in 2018, this space focuses on contemporary craft and design. Co-founder Manuela Wirth, who previously taught arts and crafts, advocated for this expansion to reconnect with her origins. The first exhibition, titled "Of Making and Material," will be curated by Make director Jacqueline Moore and opens on July 2 at 50 Hampton Road, adjacent to the current Hauser & Wirth gallery. It showcases pieces by artists including Adam Buick, Helen Carnac, and others, with prices between $2,000 and $20,000, highlighting materials like wood and glass. In August, ceramist Florian Gadsby will hold a residency, while the fall program will feature "Selected by Make," showcasing works from American and British artisans. The Hamptons are increasingly recognized as a hub for art and design, with institutions such as the Parrish Art Museum and LongHouse Reserve enhancing the area's cultural landscape. Moore observes a rising interest in craft and a seamless transition of collectors between art and design.
