Hauser & Wirth Opens Major Chelsea Gallery with Dieter Roth Retrospective

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Hauser & Wirth launched a second New York gallery in Chelsea, occupying a 24,000-square-foot industrial space at 511 West 18th Street. The venue, designed by Annabelle Selloff, retains features of its past as a stable and the 1970s Roxy roller rink disco. Its inaugural exhibition, running from January 23 to April 18, 2013, features over 100 works by the late Swiss-German artist Dieter Roth, including video, installation, prints, and paintings. Collaborations with his son Björn Roth, assisted by Björn's sons Oddur and Einar, are highlighted, with reconstructed pieces like chocolate and sugar towers made in the gallery kitchen. The show, organized with the Dieter Roth Foundation in Hamburg, includes several works never before seen in the U.S. Mark Payot, vice president and director of the New York galleries, noted the space addresses artists' needs for industrial settings and reflects Roth's foundational role in the gallery's program. A permanent bar, the 'Roth New York Bar,' was installed for the exhibition. Future shows will feature Roni Horn, Paul McCarthy, and Matthew Day Jackson, artists inspired by Roth.
