Hauser & Wirth and Paul Schimmel to Open 100,000-Square-Foot LA Gallery in Historic Flour Mill

institutional · 2026-04-20

Hauser & Wirth gallery and curator Paul Schimmel will establish a major new Los Angeles art space at 901 East 3rd Street in the downtown Arts District. Occupying a 100,000-square-foot historic flour mill complex, the venue comprises seven buildings including a Neo-Classical bank, a five-story mill, and warehouses with arched truss ceilings and skylights. The gallery plans to present three to five concurrent exhibitions that rotate several times annually. Programming will feature Los Angeles-based artists from the gallery's roster alongside historical and thematic group shows, international artists new to LA, and solo presentations by artists unfamiliar to both the city and gallery. In January 2015, Hauser Wirth & Schimmel will mount a three-month group exhibition focused on LA artists who have emerged over the past fifteen years within the un-renovated spaces. Following this temporary show, the complex will close for renovation under a long-term lease and reopen permanently the next winter. The largest building on site contains a windowed clerestory, offering varied exhibition environments.
