Haus der Kunst cancels Joan Jonas exhibition due to financial mismanagement

institutional · 2026-04-20

The Haus der Kunst in Munich has called off an upcoming exhibition featuring works by Joan Jonas, attributing the decision to financial challenges stemming from previous management mistakes. This exhibition, which is on display at Tate Modern in London until 5 August, was set to move to Munich in November. Following the overspending beyond the budget, business director Bernhard Spies enacted stringent austerity measures. Issues included inadequate documentation of critical decisions and poor judgments. The cancellation came after the sudden resignation of former director Okwui Enwezor for health reasons, and a successor has yet to be appointed. Despite the ongoing London exhibition, the museum faced difficulties in securing funding for the show.
