Hastings Contemporary Examines Land-Sea Connection in 'Edge' Exhibition

Hastings Contemporary is set to showcase 'Edge: Where the Land Meets the Sea', a significant exhibition scheduled from 26 September 2026 to 3 January 2027. Co-curated alongside The Land Gardeners, consisting of Henrietta Courtauld and Bridget Elworthy, the exhibit will display over 40 pieces by both modern and contemporary artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Cornelia Parker, and Gillian Wearing. The exhibition explores the interaction between land and sea, portraying the coastline as a vibrant area of exchange. Anya Gallaccio will present a reworked version of her installation 'The Look of Things' using soil sourced from a nearby farm. Additionally, David Nash's 'Wooden Boulder' series, initiated in 1978, follows a carved sphere along the River Dwyryd, while Andy Goldsworthy's 'Rockweed' (2023) captures his experience beneath rockweed. Otobong Nkanga’s tapestry 'Tied to the Other Side' (2021) contemplates marine resource ownership and maritime fatalities. The Land Gardeners describe the edge as a barometer for planetary health, and Director Kathleen Soriano emphasizes the exhibition's role in illustrating humanity's part in maintaining ecological balance. A related exhibition, 'Horizon: Where the Sea Meets the Sky', is set to launch in autumn 2027.
