Hasselblad 500 EL/M “20 Years in Space” Edition Celebrated in New Video
Hasselblad has released a video on its YouTube channel highlighting the 500 EL/M “20 Years in Space” edition camera from 1982. This limited edition, of which only 1,500 units were made worldwide, commemorates two decades since a customized Hasselblad camera flew aboard NASA's Mercury 8 mission in October 1962. The camera features a silver-gray leather finish inspired by the Moon. Hasselblad cameras have a storied history with NASA, including capturing the iconic "Earthrise" photo by Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders and the first steps on the Moon during Apollo 11. The 500 EL, introduced in 1965, was the first electronic camera in space and a modified version was used on the lunar surface. The special edition can still be found used, with prices ranging from $2,000 to $4,000. In 2019, Hasselblad also released a matte black 907X edition for the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing.
