Hashim Sarkis Unveils Theme for 2020 Venice Architecture Biennale
Hashim Sarkis, the curator for the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, revealed the theme "How will we live together?" for the 2020 event, scheduled from May 23 to November 29. The Lebanese architect seeks to foster environments that promote coexistence. He highlighted the significance of the theme's components: "how" signifies techniques, "will" represents willingness, "we" indicates inclusion, "live" refers to survival, and "together" emphasizes collective action amidst political and economic challenges. Sarkis encouraged architects to partner with various professionals for national pavilion initiatives, with 34 countries already participating. Central topics will include the interplay between digital and physical spaces, equitable housing, community equity, and global crises. Baratta anticipates designs that confront current realities while providing hope, focusing on the duality of shelter requirements and urban change.
