Harun Farocki's Parallel I-IV at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo
The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin presents Parallel I-IV, a four-channel video installation by Harun Farocki (1944–2014), completed shortly before his death. The work documents the evolution of computer graphics in video games, from elementary iconography to hyperrealism, exploring how cinema influenced virtual reality and how VR has since surpassed it. The series begins with Parallel I, using mathematical algorithms to create trees, clouds, water, and fire across two simultaneous screens. Parallel II follows a hero trying to escape a digital world. Parallel III reveals the backstage, treating games as stages to analyze their virtual limits. Parallel IV closes the cycle, where characters' actions are ignored by others. Farocki, described by Thomas Elsaesser in 1983 as 'the best unknown filmmaker in Germany,' produced over a hundred films and videos, treating subjects as objects in the tradition of Godard and Brecht. The exhibition runs until February 12, 2017.
