Hartashen Megalithic Avenue: Armenia's Ancient Stone Rows

In Armenia's Shirak Province, the village of Hartashen is home to a prehistoric avenue of megaliths, dating back to the Bronze Age (2000-1500 BCE). The stones, arranged in three uneven rows of basalt, stand at approximately 6,900 feet above sea level and have puzzled researchers for decades. Their purpose remains unknown, though theories range from astronomical alignment to ceremonial or burial significance. The site has never been heavily excavated or reconstructed, preserving its raw state. During the Soviet Era, archaeological focus was on larger fortresses, leaving Hartashen lightly studied. The surrounding region offers additional cultural attractions, including Gyumri, Armenia's second city, and the town of Artik with its historic tuff-stone churches. Other megalithic sites in Armenia, such as Zorats Karer and the Ughtasar petroglyphs, provide comparative context. Despite the lack of tourist infrastructure, the site remains open to visitors, who can walk among the stones. Local heritage groups have called for greater protection, but the site's obscurity has so far spared it from damage.
