Harry Potter TV Series Renewed for Season 2 at HBO

other · 2026-05-07

HBO has renewed its Harry Potter TV series for a second season, with filming set to begin in autumn 2025. The second season is expected to adapt J.K. Rowling's The Chamber of Secrets. The first season, covering Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, will premiere on HBO Max in December 2025. Writer Jon Brown, known for Succession, has been promoted to co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner, who remains showrunner. Gardiner cited overlapping production schedules and Brown's promotion as key to maintaining momentum. The series plans to adapt all seven books over a decade, with each season covering one book. The first trailer was released in March 2025. Young actors Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger), and Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley) were cast from over 30,000 applicants. No actor has been cast as Lord Voldemort, though Cillian Murphy, Andy Serkis, and Tilda Swinton have been suggested. Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort in the films, endorsed Swinton for the role. Season one has been filming since July 2025; HBO chairman Casey Bloys confirmed writing for season two began in November 2024. A premiere date for season two has not been announced.
