Haroon Mirza on Light, Time, and Adisciplinary Practice at Ishara Art Foundation
Haroon Mirza discusses his 'adisciplinary' practice, rejecting traditional disciplinary boundaries between art and science. His light installation 'Light Work xlix' (2022) is on view at Ishara Art Foundation in Dubai, UAE, as part of the group exhibition 'Notations on Time' until 2 June. The work breaks visible light into red, green, and blue, forming white light on the ceiling that then breaks back down due to shadows, meditating on the speed and nature of light. A prehistoric stone in the installation represents geological time, while photons generated by electrical current suggest infinity. Mirza argues that art cannot be apolitical once placed in a gallery context, citing Jacques Rancière's 'The Politics of Aesthetics'. He also co-curates the audiovisual label OUTPUTS in London, currently working on an album featuring Seth Price, Rosa Barba, and Cory Archangel.
