Harald Szeemann’s Legacy Explored at Monte Verità Conference

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

In Switzerland, the Fondazione Monte Verità is organizing 'Luoghi dell’utopia,' a conference commemorating Harald Szeemann on the 20th anniversary of his passing. This second annual event focuses on Szeemann's impact, especially his landmark 1978 exhibition 'Monte Verità. Le Mammelle della Verità.' After arriving in the early 1970s, he wed Ingeborg Lüscher and became a pioneer in independent curatorship with initiatives like 'La Mamma' and 'Il Sole.' The exhibition, which debuted in Ascona and later toured Zurich, Vienna, Berlin, and Munich, solidified his global standing. The conference will feature sessions on Szeemann’s techniques and interdisciplinary culture, as well as dialogues on the changing roles of museums, facilitated by curators Nicoletta Mongini and Gianna Mina.
