HAPAX Magazine: A Biannual Photography Journal Commissioning Unique Works

Founded in London in 2021 by Christiane Monarchi and Gordon MacDonald, HAPAX Magazine is a biannual photography journal that seeks to redefine the traditional visual arts publication. It invites artists and curators to produce images that break away from their typical styles. The title is inspired by 'hapax legomenon,' a literary term for a word that appears only once in a text. Each issue showcases unique photographic works alongside a written piece that discusses the creative journey. Exclusively available in print, the magazine emphasizes physicality and distinctiveness, compensating contributors with £500 per project. The fifth issue features artists such as Tshepiso Moropa and Jenny Lewis, while the sixth, set for November 2024, will include works from Abiba Coulibaly and others, curated by an unnamed individual. Across five issues, HAPAX has partnered with 33 artists and curators, positioning itself as a collectible in a digital age.
