Hao Jingfang & Wang Lingjie Win ArtReview Asia Xiàn Chǎng Prize at West Bund Art and Design Fair
Hao Jingfang and Wang Lingjie received the ArtReview Asia Xiàn Chǎng Prize for their 2015 immersive installation A Cube of Light, which uses light and fog. The award was part of a curated project by ArtReview Asia editors at the West Bund Art and Design fair in Shanghai from 9 to 13 November 2016. A jury including Clara Kim, senior curator at Tate Modern, and Hou Hanru, artistic director of MAXXI in Rome, selected the winners. The Xiàn Chǎng initiative featured 25 international artists exploring how context shapes contemporary art's meaning across space and time. Participating artists included Bi Rongrong, Laurent Grasso, and Haroon Mirza, among others, with supporting galleries such as Vanguard Gallery and Lisson Gallery. The project aimed to extend the magazine's content into Asia's diverse reality, emphasizing site-specific engagement. ArtReview Asia Xiàn Chǎng derives its name from Chinese characters meaning 'on the spot' or 'at the site,' highlighting the importance of location in art. The fair showcased works in various media, including large-scale sculpture, installation, moving image, and performance.
