Hans Rosenström's sound installation at Four Freedoms Park
Finnish sound artist Hans Rosenström's site-specific installation 'Out of Silence' is on view at Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island, New York, until June 21. The multi-speaker piece uses layered voices from Estonian choir Vox Clamantis across four sections of the park, inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1941 Four Freedoms speech. Curated by Latvian curator Alina Girshovich, the work was commissioned to mark the 90th birthday of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Rosenström, known for sculpting space with sound, developed the project during a 2024 residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York. The park's memorial, designed by Estonian-born architect Louis Kahn, who benefited from New Deal programs, provides a resonant setting. Rosenström emphasizes the human voice as a medium to shape surroundings.
