Hans Op de Beeck's 'Danse Macabre' Installed at Tenuta Dello Scompiglio

exhibition · 2026-05-12

Hans Op de Beeck's monumental sculpture 'Danse Macabre' (2021) is now on view at Tenuta Dello Scompiglio in Vorno, Capannori, near Lucca, Italy, from April 11 to October 25, 2026. The work, previously shown outdoors at the Bruges Triennial in Belgium (May 8–October 24, 2021), is a life-sized, monochrome carousel populated by skeletons in 19th-century costumes, rendered in a grisaille palette of black, white, and gray. The installation transforms the exhibition hall into a fictional nocturnal landscape with gravel, bare trees, puddles, and oil-drum braziers, leading to the silent carousel. The exhibition also features the animated film 'Vanishing Point' (2024, 18'2"), made with watercolor, with music by Sam Vloemans performed by Hermes Ensemble. Curated by Angel Moya Garcia, the show explores vanitas, memento mori, and the medieval danse macabre tradition, using Op de Beeck's signature gray to evoke timelessness and existential reflection. The artist, born in 1969 in Turnhout, Belgium, is represented by Galleria Continua (San Gimignano, Beijing, Les Moulins, Havana, Rome, São Paulo, Paris), Galerie Daniel Templon (Paris, Brussels, New York), and Almine Rech (Paris, Brussels, Shanghai, New York, Monaco, Gstaad).
