Hans Berg on Collaborating with Nathalie Djurberg and Upcoming Album

Hans Berg, one half of the Swedish artist duo with Nathalie Djurberg, discusses their creative process and his solo work in an interview. The duo, both born in Rättvik in 1978, is currently exhibiting at the Mart in Rovereto, Italy, as part of a project involving Moderna Museet and Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. Berg, a self-taught musician and producer, describes how their collaboration typically starts with Djurberg's idea for a film or installation, followed by extensive discussion and Berg's development of a sound palette. He composes music directly to the finished film, though sometimes the music comes first. Berg notes that while he initially kept his club music separate from his art music, he now embraces their cross-pollination. He co-founded the label UFO Station Recordings in 2014 with Swedish DJ Johanna Knutsson to release their own music with full artistic freedom. Berg's upcoming solo album, 'Sounds of the Forest Forgotten,' will be released in February on the New York label 2MR, featuring seven techno and ambient tracks on vinyl and digital. One track is the soundtrack for Djurberg's film 'Butterfly,' blending both worlds. Berg plans live performances in America and Europe to support the release.
