Hannes Peer shares Milan favorites for Wallpaper* Travel Guide launch

Milan-based architect and designer Hannes Peer highlights his favorite spots in Milan for the launch of Wallpaper*'s Milan Travel Guide. Peer, who studied at Politecnico in Milan and Technical University of Berlin, worked for Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam and Zvi Hecker in Berlin before founding his eponymous studio in 2009. His studio is located in the Porta Romana neighborhood, near the OMA-designed Fondazione Prada and Piazza Olivetti. Peer recommends family-run Trattoria Masuelli San Marco for authentic Milanese dishes like costoletta alla Milanese. He also suggests Bar Basso on Via Plinio for a negroni sbagliato and Marchesi 1824, the city's oldest pasticceria. Architectural landmarks he admires include Torre Velasca, a brutalist symbol of post-war Italian design, and Piero Portaluppi's art deco Villa Necchi Campiglio. Peer praises Milan's intellectual environment, where designers, architects, and gallerists foster exchange, and notes the coexistence of established elegance and vibrant youth culture. He describes the city as surprisingly small yet immensely creative, with a character that reveals itself slowly. Peer advises visiting in September when Milanese return to work, dressing casually to blend in, and admiring Miuccia Prada.
